Islam: Thinkiing about taking the plunge

It's been two months since my motorcycle accident and today is the first day I've had the power to crutch it 200 meters to an internet shop.

I live in a Mussie community and without a doubt the kindest, most respectfull Thai people I have ever known ... Furgus was right.

Having read all the books I had available, a friend left an English version called, An Introduction To Islam. Never been anything but a nonbeliever since childhood, but I have the notion lately, after reading so many tidbits that actually made sence, I'd like to become one of those dreadful terrorists.

Hey JD...You thinking of getting a prayer rug?

By the way, I concur with your statement about some of the nicest Thais I have met were of the Allah Akbar crowd.

But, no pork, no drinking. I doubt I'll make a model Mussie but WTF. It's not like I believe in The Big A, and denouncing Christianity is far from a problem .. After reading about 200 pages it makes more sense to me than The Bible stories and that same old dogma ever did.

Good to hear you've survived your accident. Sounds serious.

Anyway good luck with the Muslim thing.

Mind you that's no alcohol and praying seven times a day. Are you ready for that or would you go the "soft' Muslim route.
If you're being run out of town, get in front of the crowd and make it look like a parade.

nice to see you around JD

and id second that too...that thai muslims are some of the most sincere folk ive met here.

just a friend's opinion jd....think about theory vs practice. can you learn from the quran and not feel obligated to pray 5 times a day pointed towards mecca? is postulating yourself in that direction necessary to digest those lessons, or if you dont point in the right direction, are the lessons null and void?

BTW...have you checked out Yusuf's new album (cat stevens) its pretty dang good.

Glad you pulled through the accident JonnyD!

I suffered through a 1st read of the Quran during my first stint in Saudi. It's all the same propagated horseshit to me, but if it gives you comfort, go for it!

I too concur on Islamic Thais. Nothing but cool-mo-dees IME.

Re: Islam: Thinkiing about taking the plunge

I also feel you should follow your heart.

Islam, like any other religion, promotes goodness. IMO, It's just when certain individual practitioners try using it to advance their own money/power agendas that things start getting a little shady.

My (American) Mom converted to Islam over twenty years ago. My Dad is Iranian. He gave her the choice though, none of that "You MUST convert!" crap.

It has made her VERY happy and at peace.

I agree with Frannie too, you don't necessarily need to convert in order to use its' tenets in your daily life. I was around Islam, Christianity and Buddhism growing up. I think all 3 have good facets and facets I don't particularly agree with. These days I'm agnostic, have been since I can remember.

Good luck and be happy though, whatever your decision!

Don't ask a Thai the way to Mecca. They don't even know the where the next village is. You'll get at least 16 answers ranging from next door to a simple point which tells you anywhere between 1km and 250km. good luck
