This Friday I had 3 people, one of them came into my room, being selfish pricks. How can they call themselves teachers?
Prick #1- guy that just got hired in my school. Got the best kids in his homeroom. Couple of weeks into his job he comes into my room saying he is leaving to Europe. Just like that. Because "these kids can't be bothered to say hello to you in the morning". I basically gave him my blessing to go. But, inside I was thinking "first of all, you are a prick for leaving a homeroom with no teacher mid_term for no reason. Secondly, you are new. YOU are the one who has to prove something to the kids and gain their respect. Just because you are a foreigner and call yourself a "teacher" doesn't mean anything. Selfish prick, fuck the kids, its all about him and his fucking emotions.
Prick #2- the music teacher. She has been there since the beginning and the school just hired a new teacher with a Dr. in music. The old teacher (thai) even put a chain and lock in the music room so the Dr couldn't get into the room. The thai music teacher has resorted to tell the students not to participate in the school play (which will be the Dr's play). What a bitch. It's not about YOU, you selfish bitch, it is about the KIDS! It is ALWAYS about them, not you. Using the kids against someone for your selfish evil plans is bullshit and you are NOT a teacher. Karma will get you for using the kids like that. Bitch!
Prick #3- dr. Science guy. He has had enough so he gave his notice. The official last day is next month, but secretly he is going to leave as soon as he gets the check for this month because "he doesn't trust the school the pay him his last check". Bullshit! My school has never done that to anyone. I know that for a fact. So, he will leave the students with no science teacher and yet again, the year will be ruined. This is serious science to upper level grades. Asshole. Leave the kids with no teacher . They will probably end up falling behind a lot and the new teacher will come in all lost I am sure. Asshole.
There is no "I" in TEACHER you pricks. It is all about THEM not you. Using or harming students because of you bullshit is not cool. Karma will get you. ASSHOLES! Every year we gotta deal with this and the kids are always falling behind. Bullshit!

Sad state of affairs. However, the Thais are pretty adaptable people. Home room teachers aren't such an essentail compared to having teachers for every lesson. As for the science lessons. I'm sure the kids won't be made to suffer from bad grades. Their faculty head will make judicious use of liquid paper and up the grades - same old same old![]()
You are like me AF you have a conscience something missing in way to many people today. They just dont give a fuck except for themselves. Sick it is.

agree with your thoughts. i think the answer is that many farang teach in thailand just to fund their extended holiday. a few current posters on Ajarn Forum have even said that.
they don't take their job seriously at all. they usually say the students are lazy or not worthy of their dedication to rationalize their behavior and attitude to them self.
when actually, IMO, it is always up to the teacher to use classroom management tools, motivation and creativity to get the students learning while they are in your classroom.

sorry to hear it man.
this is part of the teaching experience here. you simply get people who care nothing but themselves. and yes, they are everywhere. its just that so far from home, in an exotic, warm place, you get people who come here to get away- only to be here for a hot second and - get away.
some never stop running. some learn from it and grow up.we all have those times in our life. remember, we are advance in maturity at different times.
no robi, all farang are expected to understand thai culture prior tobeing here, and conform to their way. especially new teachers who have never travelled.
so its not the schools fault. its the teachers for not learning thai culture whilst they teach 25 hours a week
sometimes places suck to work at. if it happens every year, it begins to stink.
(like my sarcasm?)
Funny though. After being back in at school in the West these kind of walk outs, fears of not being paid properly, replacing teachers every 5 minutes, etc. just doesn't happen like it does in Thailand.
If teachers think they might not be paid properly, where is that coming from? If this "happens every year" then how is it the fault of the new and different teachers arriving every year? They're all just "selfish pricks", is that it? If that's the case then the school needs to get new people to do the recruiting. If the students are "falling behind", then the admin and school heads need to be held accountable and do something about it.
It's about responsibility. A school needs to take responsibility for its problems, not blame them on passing teachers that react the same way "every year".
st francis (my nick) was a classic case of this. put it to ya this way (fact) on my 8th month, out of a staff of 27 farang teachers, i was 5th on seniority. think about that. the turnover was so incredibly high it was ridiculous. i was the most senior secondary school farang teacher there... I N S A N E.
and the school's take on it?
...everyone elses fault. all farang are bullshit.
what did i do?
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFGZufk4HFs"]YouTube - steve miller band take the money and run[/ame]
and in my case, it was a maturity thing. i didnt have enough money to just allow the school to keep a months wage (50,000 baht in 2001) which was a lot. and i needed it. to live. so in a way, i should have planned better. but i was 25 years old...and a bit stoopid.
anyways, so when they were withholding salaries from other staff, no one gave any notice. it all snowballed. the school was holding money back because a guy stained a mattress in his condo. i mean jesus, thats 50,000 baht. the cheap ass mattress was 2-3k. the school just felt spiteful and they had no reprecussions for their actions. we-you dichotomies (in group - out group) allow this kind of behavior.
thats the kind of accountability that goes on there. like, when they fuck with a few teachers, and others leave. they think clamping down and being even tougher will work. so more leave and it exponentially gets higher. because i didnt have savings, i left when i got paid. its pretty damn simple.
"teachers have hot heart and leave too much. dont think of the students"
and this is sometimes the case.
although i sympathize with a.f.'s take on him wanting to have a better, more stable quality of teacher...i think a lot of people come here with the best intentions. i really feel that.

i'm guessing the school that the op works at is on the low end of the pay scale. is that right op?
that's usually the main reason that a school has a high turnover. either that or as you mentioned bad recruiting skills. schools that pay higher than average salaries and have skilled recruiters usually have a lower turnover even if other aspects of the job aren't perfect, from my experience.

Agreed. However, in all fairness, the Thais schools have created such a bad reputation for themselves by not honouring their side of the agreements that teachers are often put into the position where they feel they are forced to be pro-active so that they don't get burned by the Thai admin - such as the science teacher booking out to ensure he gets paid.![]()
