Who you gonna call?

After browsing my local paper from Phuket
The police are very reassuring....

http://www.phuketgazette.net/news/in...4399&display=1

PHUKET: The police emergency phone number, 191, should be back in service as early as tomorrow, after inquiries were made by the Gazette as to why it had not been functioning for at least two weeks.

Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commander Pol Col Kokiat Wongvorachart told the Gazette yesterday that the 191 line had not been working for about 15 days, and police were still waiting for it to be repaired.

This morning the Gazette contacted the chief of the Telephone Organization of Thailand (TOT), Phuket branch, Pairoj Somsri, explained the problem, and asked why it was taking so long to fix.

After checking with the police, K. Pairoj called back to say that the problem had been tracked down to an ISDN network terminal (NT) in the police station.

“There is no problem with the TOT system, or with the 191 network. However, the police installed an NT supplied by a third party, which malfunctioned. They sent it to be repaired and it has not come back yet.

“We will find a spare NT to replace the broken one while it is being fixed. We will do it tomorrow – it should not take long – and after that people will be able to call the police on the emergency line,” he said.

In the meantime, Col Kokiat said, anyone wishing to report an emergency may call Tel: 076-212129.

In Phuket there's only one number to call.

two weeks?
I wonder how long 191 would have been out of order if the Phuket Gazette had not asked.

Maybe I will phone the number later today to see if it is actually fixed.

I wonder how many people have actually needed the police and could not get through or know who to phone?

Imagine if 999 went down in the UK....

They really do not have a sense of priority in this country at all...

There are a lot of Thai bashers on various forums who live in LOS and try and compare things with back home but in some cases the bashing is entirely justified (like the average road manners of a local) Electro made a good point above.

U.K. Dial 999. 1 second later "Which service do you require?" from the operator. After answering another second goes by and you're connected to the relevant emergency service.

Up country Thailand (This happened to me after witnessing 3 blokes kicking the shit out of a girl in my soi) Dial 191. Phone rings for 30 seconds. No answer.

Plus if I see another bunch of selfish, ignorant locals holding up an ambulance at a traffic light so they can u-turn/pull out/jump a red light to be on their own self-centred way I'm liable to get violent.

I always remember a bit in Lonely Planet about Thais being notorious "scofflaws" when it came to driving. Well those scofflaws killed another one of my students this week. That brings the total of Thais I personally knew wasted on the roads to 12 in the 5 years I've been here. Me and my mates used to have a bike gang back in Britain riding the heavy duty rice rockets (my last one was a 1999 CBR 900 Fireblade) and the only accident we ever had was 1 guy broke his leg after coming off after hitting a patch of diesel.

If this is Thai bashing so be it.

I expect things to be different, i know things are different.

But really the Emergency services should be the Number 1 priority in EVERY country.

You say about the idiots who hold up Ambulances. I really hate that. I just hope it will be them one day laying in the back and they are in so much paid. And they realise the ambulance has stopped and maybe just maybe they will think it is because some lame prick wants to pull right, or over take a motorbike. Just to be a wanker.

Someone does need to inject some Priorities into these people.

You probably didnt read my thread when I got hit by a pickup truck that jumped the traffice lights. But the police came to the Crossroads, and i beckoned them over several times, and they just drove off.

They wonder why tourism is dying....
