My response to the writer:

Dear sir,

I recently read an article you wrote and would like to correct a few points.

Yes, you have it correct that Pattaya, the city in which I live is
'Known' for its sex trade.

Just like Pittsburg it known for steel and Philadelphia is know for sandwiches.

However, Pattaya is a city. It has shopping centers, race tracks,
country clubs, beaches, 5 star hotels and yes, tourists and hookers.

You have done it an injustice in that you are spreading a false story,
most of the prostitutes are women 20-40 years of age. Certainly not
all under 18.

By spreading such lies you 1) demonstrate your own ignorance and 2)
actually encourage people who wish to engage in sexual services with
minors to come to Pattaya in search of such services and thereby
create a demand for such a market.

Now the real story:

Most people in Pattaya are not prostitutes.
Those that are cater to the largely foreign market (tourists) or the
high end domestic market (mostly Bangkok businessmen). The clients do
not want uneducated minors beholden to pimps. They largely seek women
aged 20-40 in the Walking Street, Beach Area Bars, or One 300 meter
street called Soi 6.

The clents want women ( and sometimes men) who amuse them. Who listen
to them, who flatter them. The clients bring the workersback to their hotels and
swim in the pools, bring them to resturants, movies, etc.

These women do not have pimps. The bars are owned by mostly Thai
owners but there are also foreign owners. The bar owners are not
pimps. Most bars have a Mamasan who is in charge of the women
workers. The girl do not owe her money. She functions as a
supervisor.

Most of the bars are either open beer bars where the women work behind
the bar or gogo bars where they operate much like similar
establishments in the US.

The customer, if he wishes to take a woman from the bar, pays the bar
approximately $10-15. This not for sex. It is the fee for taking a
worker from the bar before the end of shift. Presumably the worker
would be talking to customers who would by her drinks (cokes priced at
around $3-7) for the opportunity to talk with her. So it is called a
bar fine. The fine that you pay to take her away from her job of
getting people to buy drinks.

The workers at the bar get paid to work in the bar usually. Some
freelance at the bar. Ones that have a regular shift make between
$100 and $300 from the bar. They get about $1 for each drink a
customer buys them, but not for customers own drinks. Most customers
give a worker about $1 to $3 as a tip for drinking with them and
talking. (but not always)

So on a typical evening a worker might earn from nothing to about $5
in tips. A few very good lookers might be able to earn $30-40 in tips
but that would be an exception and only in a very tourist oriented
bar on walking street. Most make around $3 per night.

Of the bar fine, the worker would get about $1.

So naturally the most money that these workers could make would be
from a customer who takes them off premises with the offer of a good
tip. In an average bar that would be $15 to $30.

So what do the girls want?

Some like sex work. Many do not.

That said, they want customers who treat them decently, don't go
beyond limits etc.

The story you told.....

Forced by pimps, tricked, lied to........ is a script that is told over
and over......

Why.....

To earn money from people who want to hear that story.

More than a few of these women have men in foreign countries who send
them monthly income and have a fantasy about their Thai girlfriend.

Most of the women have husbands or boyfriends. Many have children.

I've never seen a teddy bear in a gogo bar but I reckon that that part
was added to get the story into a tear jerker for the collection
plate.

Now the concerns I have with the original story are, these people are
'planning' to come in Sept. but they haven't even got $1000 each for
airfare. And the 4 children? Where will they go to school? The
international school charges about $20,000 per child per year
(International School Eastern Seaboard).

Is Pattaya really the best city in which to raise children? (Many
people do. There are a number of 5 star hotels and the Managers are
often foreign with children.)

The article states that the site that have will be in the 'middle of
the city' actually Banglamung is north of the city. A worker would
have to take a 80-100 bath motorcycle taxi ride each way to get to the
site ($3) which is prohibitive for sex workers. The area of the city
with sex workers is mainly concentrated in South Area, the beach area,
and Soi 6. Not near Baglamung Soi 33,

Many NGO that come to South East Asia are more about getting
contributions in the home country to support an expat lifestlye here.
They often 'pretend'to do good work for the sake of fundraising but
little on the ground gets accomplished.

Pattaya has several existing organizations that already serve the community.

The most notable is Father Ray Foundation (Father Ray Foundation)
which runs a vocational college for the handicapped. It is a huge
organization. There is also the Pattaya orphanage. Pattaya has a
Catholic church (St. Nicholas).

One futher point, the 'girls' from Russia....
Well I used to live in the an Apartment in Pattaya and the entire 8th
floor was 'Russian' prostitutes. They were hardend women mostly from
former Soviet Republics most notably Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. They
were largely antisocial. They did not 'mingle'.

Mostly they worked in Walking Street bars catering to a Russian
clientele. They charged clients 5000-10000 baht ( $200-300)
similar to what is going on in similar establishments in the US. On
their doors they had their picture id photocopied. I believe it was
part of whatever arrangement the manager had with the police and/or
apartment. They were quiet in the apartments. No clients were ever
permitted into their area. The women were free to come and go as they
like. Many ate in the restaurant downstairs.

From overhearing their conversations, some of them spent some time in
Pattaya, then they would go to the UAE, Doha, middle-east for part of the
year. I think this had to do with their tourist visas. "Pretending
to be tourists'' not hookers.

Anyway that is my two cents.
