Dear Killing Me Softly:
I appreciate your concerns about the recent article posted on us of our upcoming return to Thailand. I realize that there were some inaccuracies, with a few of our specific stories of our past experiences being reported as generalities. I am sure that you can appreciate the difficulties of explaining Thai culture and the atmosphere of Pattaya to someone who has never experienced it. All in all, Mr. Biedka did an excellent job of presenting our ministry goals.
The title of the newspaper article was actually "Lower Burrell couple to go to Thailand to combat sex trade" and I feel you misrepresented that by titling your Ajarn Forum thread, "Christians going to save Pattaya". Regardless of our possible differences of Faith, certainly you cannot not deny the glaring needs of the sex-workers in Pattaya.
As stated on our website, our ministry activities are not strictly religious, but are socially minded. These will include, "Emotional support/relationship building, bar visitation/friendship evangelism, free health check-ups and STD testing at local clinics, Bible studies, English classes and job-retraining resources." I am sure that providing job-retraining to sex-workers wishing to exit the lifestyle is a need recognized by people of all faiths.
We are not newbies to Thailand or the Pattaya area, as we lived in both Pattaya and Chiang Mai from 1994-1995 and from 1997-2004 and have returned annually since then. We have worked for both Rahab Ministries and International Justice Mission while in Thailand. Both are valid NGOs recognized by the Royal Thai government. I assure you that we have our paperwork in order.
As for our 4 children; 2 are joint citizens and all 4 have been raised in Thailand. All 6 members of our family speak, read and write both Thai and English fluently. My mother and father-in-law have pastored a local Pattaya church and have ministered to the people of Pattaya for over 35 years. We have a strong family and friend support network in place in the Pattaya area, so our worries are minimal concerning family. We are as "local" as you can get. As for our 4 children, no they will not be involved in the ministry.
Yes, we do accept donations, but I have worked 2 full-time jobs over the past 7 years, saving for our return to Thailand.
The Father Ray Foundation is an excellent ministry and our local Pattaya church which we will be working with has worked closely with them in the past and we would certainly be open to partnering with them in the future. We believe that there is plenty of room in Pattaya City for other social services oriented ministries.
I hope I have addressed some of your concerns. We certainly mean no offense and truly want to serve the Thai people. Once up and running we invite you to visit us in Pattaya, as we will be proud to present to you the validity of our ministry and the social services we will be providing to the sex-workers of Pattaya.
Are there sex-workers elsewhere in the world? Of course there are. Our love of Thai language and culture, coupled with our faith, compel us to serve the sex-workers of Pattaya.
I apologize for not being able to post links to the above mentioned organizations. As I a new to Ajarn Forum, it would not let me add hotlinks. My above organizational references can be found on Google search as: The Hiding Place in Thailand, Rahab Ministries Thailand, and International Justice Mission.
Blessings:
Bill
Are you for real?
...at least he responded: the reply is couched in do-gooderism missionary-speak with the usual self-justifying codes, but, all in all, he seems determined to push his values onto unsuspecting natives...the girls will eat him up and spit out the indigestible parts: take what he has to offer and rush back to minding their own business...meanwhile Rev. Bill and co. will enjoy the tropics at the expense of others...parasites...
...majestically enthroned amid the vulgar herd...
Sounds like a lot of TEFLing.the reply is couched in do-gooderism missionary-speak with the usual self-justifying codes, but, all in all, he seems determined to push his values onto unsuspecting natives...the girls will eat him up and spit out the indigestible parts: take what he has to offer and rush back to minding their own business...meanwhile Rev. Bill and co. will enjoy the tropics at the expense of others...parasites...
...only to the naive...
You're all sinners. Rev. Bill will pray for you.
"Take this, brother; may it serve you well."
I need to repeat what other here have stated.
Why don't you do these same acts of Christian service in Pittsburg?
Saves you the airfare and any you have saved can help you achieve the same goals
in the states.
To be frank, most of us believe you to be a fraud.
