    Why Thais Don't Swim......

    I've always wondered....

That was my experience down in Songkhla in any case.

    Muslims would "wade'

My understanding was that Thai Buddhists didn't like the water?

Sounds a bit absurd, I know.....

    Any ideas.

    ---Update---

Also saw this in Pattaya, Koh Samui, Phuket, etc.

I once helped take about fifty students up to Hua Hin....

    Only two could swim...

Up in Nongkhai a town of 60 thousand there's not one public swimming pool but yet they have 3 swimming clubs. There's no money in teaching kids to swim so hence noone learns.

Yeah, I put it down to cash and access. Kids won't learn if they have no access to a pool. I shall survey my classes today (uni) and find out how many can swim.

What's next? Are you going to ask why blacks can't swim?

Buriram has an olympic size public pool and there are lots of folks swimming there everyday. Admittedly not too many come out in the brightest of the sunlight though. Early morning and late afternoon/evening are very busy. It costs 20b per kid and 30b per adult and the place is packed.

Well, Al.....Thais are often poor swimmers "because they don't have the buoyancy."

Yes, between extended bouts of eating, they do in fact swim.

I've always viewed public swimming facilities as public toilets anywhere in the world....you won't catch me in one...ever...

I remember a thousand years ago in Canada when my GF and I moved into our first apartment complex that had a pool...oh how excited we were...the first night after unpacking we got on the skin-tights, grabbed our towels and skipped merrily down to the pool only to be greeted by an OhHenry bar floating in the middle of it...fuck me that impression lasted...

Who here has peed in a public pool?...raise your hand...

    OhHenry bar...

Guilty. That's the whole point of going to a pool isn't it?

Taking a dump in a pool is unforgivable though.

It's in their DNA. A pure Thai, like a pure Poodle, will never want to swim. In biracial cases, as we see in mixed-breed dogs, a half-cast Thai child would like to swim about half the time.

My pal and I took giant dumps into a holy water fountain at a Catholic church an hour before Mass. We watched as church goers recoiled in horror at the sight of two logs floating in the sacred water.
