Been a lot of talk about violence lately on AJF ..

A British teacher is fighting for his life in hospital after being brutally attacked with a metal bar by a stranger in the holiday resort of Pattaya in Thailand.

Adam Pickles has lived in Thailand for seven years and has a baby son

Adam Pickles, 40, is in a coma and needed emergency brain surgery after the attack, which occurred when he was driving home from a night out playing pool.

Mr Pickles had only just recovered from a motorbike crash that left him in a coma, and meant he missed the birth of his eight-month-old son Benjamin.

Now friends and family are rallying round to get the funds needed for his medical care.

Adam's parents have flown from their home in Leeds to be with him in hospital.

His mum told the Daily Mail: :"'It breaks my heart. The days seem very long, just waiting, waiting, hoping he'll come back to us. It's any mum's worst nightmare."

Mrs Pickles added: "They have said this week is the crucial time as to whether he makes it."

Adam was attacked when he drove home from a bar in the Nong Prue district. On the way he got out of his car at one point, although it is not known why, and he was beaten over the head and left for dead.

A stranger found him and he was rushed to hospital where he had surgery to remove blood clots from his brain.

A Facebook page has been set up to raise funds for his care, which could cost around £70,000.

His best friend Neil Clappison, from Leeds, told the paper: 'It feels completely unreal that this is happening to Adam after all he went through last year.

"It was horrendous for him to miss the birth of his beautiful son, so what is happening now seems almost unbelievable.

"We are doing everything we can to raise the money needed to ensure Adam survives and then to bring him home.

"The hospitals there are ruthless and if they don't have the money on a per day basis, they may leave you to die.

"We won't let this happen to somebody who really is one in a million."

According to the fundraising page, the teacher's medical insurance has yet to pay out and is unlikely to cover the full cost of his treatment.

Facebook appeal for teacher in coma after Thailand assault
    May, 29, 2012

Friends of a former Leeds teacher left in a coma after an assault in Thailand are appealing for funds to pay his medical bills.

Adam Pickles, 40, was hit on the head by a metal bar in an attack last week in the city of Pattaya.

Mr Pickles has lived in Thailand for seven years where he works as an English teacher at a local college.

His friends have set-up a Facebook page to raise the £2,000 a day needed for his treatment.

Mr Pickles' parents have flown out from their home in Leeds to be by his bedside.

He remains in a critical condition and his parents said doctors were waiting for him to come out of his coma before they could fully assess his injuries.

His mother Adele Pickles said the situation was a "living nightmare".
    'Really expensive'

"He's still on a ventilator," she said.

"It's just a case of living day by day and hoping and praying each day that it is good news."

His parents are helping to look after Mr Pickles' eight-month-old son Benjamin.

According to the fundraising page, the teacher's medical insurance has yet to pay out and is unlikely to cover the full cost of his treatment.

Katie Jones, one of the friends behind the campaign, said the medical costs were high because Mr Pickles was being treated in an intensive care unit.

She said: "Earlier this week the hospital asked for another £3,000 to pay for the medication which they needed to change, which will take him through another six days."

"Everything is really expensive over there."

    aw man - so sad.

I'm surprised that it wasn't on here before now, Cluezo. I didn't want to post it myself.

I came across this randomly the other night. A friend of mine, teacher at a nearby international school - not the same as this chap's which, I believe, is Regent's - was round my place. He knows him. Says he's a good bloke. My mate was in bits.
"Take this, brother; may it serve you well."

Just a horrible horrible thing. God almighty.

Yes, I'm surprised it wasn't on here before this too. I usually do a good daily search of Thai news and must have missed it somehow. Nobody else saw it?

    Man, this is so sad.

Like I say, it was a bit random. I was searching the Daily Mail for a story about a skydiver who 'flew' without a parachute into a pile of cardboard boxes. Mate didn't believe me. I have the lappy linked up to the telly so this story flashed up and he said, "Whoah. Hang on. What's that?"

    Bad shit, that's what.

Plea to help Bradford victim of Thai attack
6:54pm Tuesday 29th May 2012 in News By James Rush

A friend of a Bradford teacher left fighting for his life in a Thai hospital after being attacked have written to William Hague for help.

Adam Pickles, a former pupil at Bradford Grammar School, has been left in a coma after brain surgery after he was attacked in the Thai city of Pattya.

Friends and family have raised money for hospital fees of £2,000 a day, and have said his insurer will not pay until the police investigation has been completed – an investigation they have also raised concerns about.

Neil Clappison, a friend of Mr Pickles for 20 years, said he feared the police investigation was not progressing and has written to the Foreign Secretary to ask for a meeting.

Mr Clappison, 42, told the Telegraph & Argus the insurance, through his work as head of English at the Regent’s International School, in Thailand, will not pay out.

He said: “At the moment they are not paying out anything until the full police investigation has finished and they find out what actually happened to Adam. Of course ....

“The problem with that is there doesn’t seem to be a police investigation – there’s nothing going on at all.”

Friends have said Adam, 40, was left for dead while making his way home after playing pool at a bar.

He was found by a passer-by and rushed to hospital.

His parents have flown from their Leeds home to be at his bedside.

Meanwhile, friends have tried to raise funds to pay for his treatment, as well as the fees to bring Adam, who last year missed the birth of his baby son Benjamin after a motorbike crash left him in a coma, back to the UK, which is expected to cost at least £70,000.

Mr Clappison said: “I strongly believe this shouldn’t be allowed to happen to any UK citizen.”

Mr Clappison said he had spoken to the British Consulate in Bangkok who told him they were only able to provide translations and inquire with the police about their investigation.

But Mr Clappison said: “I’m not prepared to leave it at that, I think there must be something that could be done.

“Surely in this country we don’t leave our citizens to die in situations like this.”

A Foreign Office spokesman told the Telegraph & Argus: “We are aware of the hospitalisation of British national Adam Pickles in Thailand.

“We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”

A Facebook page has been set up to help raise the money. Details of how to donate can be found at facebook.com/groups/adampickles or adampickles. blogspot.co.uk.

his insurer will not pay until the police investigation has been completed
Who is his insurer? I assume it's not social security. How about a reporter naming who it is? Everyone with similar policies need to know that should the worst happen, the company won't pay out.

“The problem with that is there doesn’t seem to be a police investigation – there’s nothing going on at all.”
Perhaps I'm being cynical, but it sounds like the family need to make it worth the police's while to solve the case

Mr Clappison said he had spoken to the British Consulate in Bangkok who told him they were only able to provide translations and inquire with the police about their investigation.
That's not good enough. As a British citizen, that is not good enough. A consulate official should have at least been dispatched to his hospital. That's the bare minimum that should be expected.

A Foreign Office spokesman told the Telegraph & Argus: “We are aware of the hospitalisation of British national Adam Pickles in Thailand.

“We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”
Sounds like the embassy has done two things so far. Jack, and shit.

It is. Considering his position, I'm amazed that he doesn't have the finest insurance that can be bought in Thailand.

This is terrible. Yes things happen all over the world, but when you hear that it seems an unprovoked attack and the victim wasn't a cock, it's very sad indeed.

Best wishes to him and his family

Naw, there was a thread and it was discussed at length....

or else I'm loosing my mind.

(could have been another channel, but don't think so)

guess it doesn't matter.... in any case...would it not be better to leave him where he is for the time being?

    In a coma.

    Why move him?

It would cost a whole lot of money to medi-vac him back to England in the shape he's in. (fourty thousand pounds minimum maybe?)

I did a search on "Adam Pickles" and nothing turned up. But the search system here is so fucking primitive and confusing, that's not surprising ..
