As the title suggests this is where you can add your suggestions as to how Thailand has altered since about 2002.
Obviously exchange rates and technology, but has that improved the place or not?
More shopping malls, has this increased consumerism and tourist revenue?
Have sales of temple tours and silk risen?
When I was in America a guy told me to 'have a nice day' but I didn't, so I sued him
Seems more corrupt, somehow.

Girls are prettier thanks to cheap credit.
The free trade agreements have certainly made a big difference.
Ten years is not very long to notice differences.
I did see the price of petrol and some food products go up.

This one always bemuses me, Thai tourist authorities are pushing Thailand as a shopping destination, but pial seems to be convinced that folks come here eople, even Asians, just don't come here to shop. They come here to fuck, they come here to visit temples and beaches, but they do not, in general, come here to go to glitzy (and over-priced) shopping malls. I don't know why the authorities are pushing the shopping angle. Every tourism official seems to be convinced that folks come to the land that we call smiles to shop, they don't.
So yes, we have many new malls, more malls than can possibly be healthy for business - some will surely be making a loss (Union Mall anyone?), but no, I don't think it has had any effect on tourism.

^It's a drive for consumerism and to encourage credit amongst a certain Thai class of people who's salaries simply don't allow them to freely 'shop' at these malls. It's a bizarre idea. Salaries haven't risen with the level of retail expectation aimed at them.
From the tourist angle, you can't buy anything at the malls that you can't get at home or in duty free. Add to that the fact that most Indian or Chinese tourists targeted by the TAT simply don't spend that much money. I think the TAT now has realised this, and deep down I think they do know what really brings the revenue in.
Sex. What else? Ok, some backpackers and islands too.

Now Thai restaurants expect tips.
Not as much as had changed in the previous 10 years.

Improved transport infrastructure in Bangkok: the expansion of BTS, the construction of a subway, the Airport link. So I find it easier to get around Bangkok than 10 years ago, although traffic congestion is still just as bad.
seems the car to scooter ratio has changed as well...probably the same amount of scoots ...but defo more cars...
