    Aviation Anoraks! Plane spotters etc.

I confess that I stole this link from something someone posted on TeakDoor where they have a good thread on aviation stuff, so I have to thank that poster.

Okay - it's a link in real-time to the metal flying over your head. I've been playing with it all bloody night and having a great time.

    Flightradar24.com - Live flight tracker!

Now, it won't get everything; it depends on what kind of transponder an aircraft is fitted with amongst other things. Happily, most new-ish Boeing and Airbus do have this gadget. Not many military do , which is a bit of a downer because I get a lot of heavy US stuff out of Sattahip lumbering over my roof (but then it makes sense obviously that they wouldn't want to advertise where they are going and where they've come from!)

It is addictive - if you're interested in civil aircraft.

I've been able to pop out into the garden a couple of times tonight to see a con-trail that I know is a Fed-Ex 737 coming from Singapore, or a 747 going to Taipei (I made those up, I forget where they were from) .

If you are in the USA or Europe you'll drown in information. Click on the little 'plane icon and up pops a picture of that aircraft type, it's speed, altitude, loads of other stuff I don't understand.
"Take this, brother; may it serve you well."

WebTrak: Heathrow maybe this is part of the site you mentioned - tracking around airports - not quite in real time, but interesting. Counted over 20 flights stacked into holding patterns going into Heathrow. Web trak on google gives a few more airports.

I'm just looking at Rayong and the Gulf at the moment. Fascinating.

There's a large array of what looks like scaffolding about 200 yards from my house. It's curved and about 60 feet high. There's a golf driving range that cunningly makes use of it with netting and most people just assume that's what it is. It's facing out to sea and - yep - it's something to do with ATC so I'm told.

Last night was busy after about 8pm. A lot of stuff from Singapore coming up. This morning it's mostly Air Asia. Small stuff. To the north a couple of planes to China. It would be a great screensaver thing but it times out if you don't click on something after a few minutes.

    Love it!

    ---Update---

Is there a similar thing like this for commercial ships? Plenty of freighters dropping anchor off Rayong

    Very cool.
We could all sit outside on banana lounges discussing the best way to rebuild a 4WD transmission and agree, through shared stories of conquests supporting our assertions, that there is no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.

I've just had one of those Hollywood moments: two converged and then disappeared! Don't know what happened there. One outbound from Swampy to Singapore. Glitchy

Great link. They also have apps for iOS and Android. I've installed it on my iPhone though it doesn't work over my 3G connection - have to use Wi-Fi. Looking forward to testing it tomorrow at the airport.
