"Asians are small" was in reference to body size. People think all Asians are petite people. I'm not a big guy, 5'8", and I'm shorter than most of my male students in M2 and M3. Heck, I'm shorter than a lot of the girls.

In Korea I was much shorter and smaller than many of the university males AND quite a few females.
Asians in many places are getting bigger.
But I think Westerners are also getting bigger as well.
I feel very small when I am in the west. Part of the size factor is how fat many of the westerners are, but many are just large/muscular as well...

Here's an Asian myth--"we are not prejudiced." In Thailand where I teach, I as an American with 2 American-Thai sons have been told that my sons are not eligible for any English competition because they are foreigners--even though they have lived in Thailand since they were 2 and 3 and the ONLY school they have ever attended is the same Thai school I teach in. When I asked the Director of my school, he said I needed to discuss it with the teachers and when we had our next teachers meeting, I was told that it is just the way it is and they can't change it. Willful ignorance and unwillingness to do anything to change the system. I asked them if it was not our job as teachers to teach good values, morals, and ethics--so isn't this contradictory? Furthermore, how will this impact ASEAN I wonder--currently, I have a friend from my church who is Cambodian and his Cambodian-Thai daughter who attended an international school in Cambodia is not allowed to enter competitions because she is a foreigner. I have another friend who is a Chinese doctor and his Chinese-Thai daughter may be allowed because she's Chinese--what Thailand is part of China now? Another friend runs a computer shop and he's Singaporean, but his Singaporean-Thai son is not eligible for competitions--apparently neither Cambodia nor Singapore are acceptable for Thailand, but China may be--meanwhile all westerners, even Germans are disallowed. How many of you have experienced this and more importantly to me, how do you tell your children that it's just a part of life, accept it--you're inferior? I find it odd that both the director and all the teachers believe it's wrong, but no one wants to do anything about it. As Edmund Burke said "all it takes for evil to thrive is for one good man to do nothing." I'm trying to find a way to do something as I have two sons and lots of friends and students who are hampered by this--one student is 100% Thai, BUT she and her parents lived in America for 13 years, so she's ineligible for English competitions--and she isn't foreign? Did anyone have the stones to tell the Princess (the one married to an American) that her children weren't good enough because they were foreign?

You talk about "morals and ethics" ... but see no problem with "ringers" i.e Competitors with near native ability due to living in English speaking countries. To me ... the "rules" seems quite fair.
Would I ... as a native English speaker feel any pride in winning an English speaking competition in Thailand? ... I think not.

Obviously this is Tinglish for Native English Speakers. They're just trying to make the competitions fairer for the majority of students. No one would bother entering at all if Somchai Smith and Wannapum Jones are going to win in a cakewalk every year.

i find even some of the nicest white people living in asia have an extraordinary sense of entitlement that just blows me away.
