They're not directly racially descended from Chinese. I wasn't thinking in political/geographic terms.
Han people definitely not...aboriginal Chinese definitely
---Update---
Modern Chinese are the Han people...they were not the original occupants of southeastern China...those aborigine people are the forbears of those that travelled out to Taiwan and onto the Phillipines and Polynesia...they have to be related to Thais...because they were the occupants of the rice growing areas of China before the Han took over...when looking at at Asian people overseas the two most commonly confused in apperance are Thais and Filipinos..not Mandarin speaking Chinese...and Cantonese and Tai Kadai languages have a lot of similarities...now we agree that Maoris are related to some Filipino aborigines...but not all because I think some in the west have links to Malay people.
Yes ... but they're not directly descended from them either. The Austronesians are the latest in the Polynesian family tree. I'm just calling them Malay because they comprise of the original people of that general area. Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines etc. Maybe the Taiwan abos too. That's new to me.
The Lapita people were sailors from the Malay region and went out into the Pacific...but they were different people to the Polynesians...I think the curly haired Fijians indicate how far they got...the Polynesians tend to have straighter hair
