The first controversial show I can think of on US TV is Star Trek. The first interracial kiss aside, there was a lot of shit that got passed the censors only because it took place in the future.
The Smothers Bros. Comedy Hour was yanked in spite of good ratings.
Then came Turn-On which was pulled from the schedule before even airing on the west coast.
All In The Family portrayed a bigot.
There was a brief run of a show by The National Lampoon. Perhaps both the most tasteless and the funniest thing on the air, it didn't last long.
Married With Children was a breath of bad air. It carried Fox in its infancy. (COPS and The Simpsons are still with us.)
South Park makes Family Guy look The MIckey Mouse Show. The current episode was so disgusting that even I had to pause it and turn away. Not controversial per se, but it certainly isn't shying away from anything.
Desperate Housewives had its moments. I don't see it as taking backseat to anything.
But Benny Hill, there is a show far too sophisticated for any colonial to appreciate, I suppose. (Yes, I'm being sarcastic.) I think Red Skelton was the greater talent, but that's just me.

I don't think mega rich and famous actually equates to 'masterpiece' necessarily.
You do make a good point however. Our sense of humour is intrinsically different. There is very little that has crossed the pond in original form and succeeded in either direction.
In the same way that men and women are different, as opposed to equal, British and American humour is different.
Personally I liked the direct caustic wit of Roseanne Barr, but I don't think you will find many Americans who find Jo Brand funny. Come to that, you won't find many Brits who like Jo Brand.
i doubt you'll find many americans who think Rasanne Barr is funny....never heard of jo brand, monty python had a pretty good success in the states

I don't get it, the Sun does orbit the Earth .. that's why we have Moon phases.
If you are one who believes 51+% = a majority then it's fair to say Americans are ignorant. Look what they voted in twice that lasted for 8 years. Look what almost half of them want to vote in this time.
One of our problems is the size of our country. It isn't like Europe. We have oceans on both sides with 3000+ miles in between. What is it in Blighty .. You can never be more than 60 limes from the shore?
Even the educated in America are often afflicted with ignorance. There are vast stretches of land ten times the size of many countries where it's rare to encounter a well-oiled mind.
But just like any other nation we find our own kind of people, buddy up and make the most of it.
Yankee and Brit humour are different. One nation is huge, one small. One is a superpower. One isn't. One has history. One doesn't. And so on.
However, I will never say American comedy is shit. Bill Hicks was a total legend. In saying that, he was too much for the American networks and in the end got banned from his TV slots during his contract.
This is the sort of stuff that they couldn't take.

I think JD's remark is very similar to Romney's comment on aircraft windows.
The only difference is someone had to tell Romney it was a joke.
There are few problems in life that cannot be solved with toast.
One of them, however, is opening a can of corned beef with that stupid key. This cannot easily be done at the best of times, and toast is of surprisingly little use in resolving the issue.
Malcolm Tucker has raised the bar for general insults, but especially sweary ones.
