American's do have a sense of humor and "take the piss" or whatever the fuck you call it. The difference is most Americans I've met tend to take things at face value, especially from people we don't know.
Friends put each other down all the time, it's between friends.
Americans don't really do that with strangers because we think it is rude and, and this is a big AND, many people are armed.

Agreed. I also think a lot of Americans think Americans are stupid. They don't take the piss with strangers because they expect the person to be too stupid to get the joke. We're a bit paranoid that our compatriots are all idiots, and for good reason.
