I will sometimes come across songs where I find obvious drug references, but which are oblique enough to keep under the radar.
I find them interesting.
There are the obvious and the very less obvious variety.
I'll start with two.
One obvious by Lennon, another far less obvious by Morrison. In fact, in the case of Morrison, it may be open to debate.
“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

Heroin by the Velvet Underground. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was a paean to illegal substances. I thought it was about Jane Austen.

---Update---
There she goes
There she goes again
Racing through' my brain
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she blows
There she blows again
Pulsing through' my vein
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she goes, there she goes again
She calls my name, pulls my train
No-one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she goes
And then we have Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
I won't post it.
And Lennon really did a fine job of covering that one.
Lennon: What are you drawing son?
Julian: Well pop, that's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
Good one.
This song about diet pills, by Jefferson Airplane, is so terribly misunderstood..
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
Migrated
All sounds a bit adolecent
It's really amazing how angry I get when I see Yoko Ono. Possibly one of the most destructive forces in the arts in the 20th century. I bet she fantasizes about burning the Library of Alexandria down when she masturbates.
Hi Stamp.
If you posted it doesn't register?
...mind you, I've done the same.
The title's too vague. All most of us can think of are tunes that are beyond a doubt referring to drugs, like Needle and Spoon by Savoy Brown and later by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Or Cocaine by JJ Cale. When the references become subtle it quickly turns to subjective opinions. And if a discussion of what song lyrics are drug related and which are not you'd have to cover one song at a time and devote pages of discussion and still have no answer.
A song like Fire And Rain by James Taylor IMO is about drugs because he wrote it hooked on heroin. So I assume it was drug-related.
I'd like to see the topic, what is your favorite drug tune? That would be, Don't Bogart That Joint - Little Feat
Roll another one Just like the other one You've been holding on to it And I sure would like a hit
Don't Bogart that joint my friend Pass it over to me Don't Bogart that joint my friend Pass it over to me

"Muggles"
This is about as racey as it got in the 1920's
It was just one of those things
Just one of those crazy flings
One of those bells that now and then rings
Just one of those things
It was just one of those nights
Just one of those fabulous flights
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings
Just one of those things
If we'd thought a bit before the end of it
When we started painting the town
We'd have been aware that our love affair
Was too hot not to cool down
So goodbye, dear, and amen
Here's hoping we meet now and then
It was great fun
But it was just one of those things
