    The Big Step

Just wondering what it was that made you guys move to Thailand in the first place?

Obviously eveyone has different reasons why they uprooted and moved to a different country to teach English for a lot less money than what they would get back home............

None of the above - I actually wanted a lifestyle change. Wanted something more relaxing than the one-man business I was running in the UK. I still haven't found what I was looking for - but I am having a much better time than before, just not as stress free as I'd hoped!

The women here get on your tits, you can't escape 'em, the climate sucks, sex is expensive on a teacher's wage, chang tastes like piss and I always have plent to do. But oddly I still really like it here! I think it's the lack of social responsibility that comes with being an expat anywhere in the world I guess. Oh and cigs are cheap!
Excuse me for not taking this seriously .....

sick an' tired of 9-5, decided to do a tefl so i could travel. rented out my house, handed back my company car, expense account, fax machine and mobile phone. hopped on a plane clutching a ticket to thailand, taiwan, indonesia, back to thailand, then home.
hit thailand first, kinda liked it and really didn't address the work issue, but went to taiwan after 3 weeks. stayed there for a week, got offered lots of work but turned it all down and left for indonesia(bali).taiwan sucked after being in thailand to be fair. indonesia was nice for 3 weeks or so, but more of an aussie surfer/japanese trendy vibe and not much work about. returned to thailand and after a few months on the razz, finally got a decent job in a decent city and tore up my return ticket to uk.(expired after 1 year.) apart from a trip home to sell my house (tenancy probs). been here ever since. love my job, students, and the fact that i can even take a month or two off work without having debt collectors knocking on my door. and no, i was not a failure or running away from anything, just here, i'm well content. other posters will no doubt explain why at greater length. i could return to my job in industrial sales any time, but choose not to.
never really knew about the women, chang, climate, lifestyle until i arrived. happy accident really

Always felt like a misfit at home.

I feel like a misfit here, but it's a lot warmer and I have a girl-friend who's half my age,

It really was just another place to work. After a stint in South America, one in coastal Africa I wound up in Asia. There was a job here I wanted, so I moved here. No biggie.

But Bush getting re-elected sure as hell convinced me that being out here was better than being in there.
