Should Ajarn Forum Change Software?

A number of users think that phpBB, the open source forum solution Ajarn Forum uses is not adequate for our needs here.

I've been investigating a number of different solutions, and have come to the conclusion that VBulletin is my option of choice, were I to go the paid-for commercial forum solution path..(for those that can't tell the difference it's the one that Teak Door uses!)

Obviously the structure would remain the same, and the membership and posts would be transferred over.

The question is, what do our users think? Are you happy with what we have now or would you like to see a forum with more bells whistles and knobs?

Are you the sort of person who doesn't want to have to get used to a new set of controls? Do you relish the thought of new features/smiles to play with?

Or do you just not care as long as it works?

I think it's okay as it is personally, but then I don't like change (as anyone that's seen my underpants would be able to tell you!).

With the hackers who visited the board and killed it off in its past incarnations, I would avoid Vbulletin like the plague. It is closed source and it has exploits and it costs money.

In terms of security and add-ons available, phpbb is the best. If an exploit is found, then it is quickly fixed. I can't help but think that vbulletin is made for the lazy sod who has more money than brains.

And does it really have any more features than phpbb already has?

And what users are clamoring for more? This makes post, has smilies and works most all of the time. I have been trying on and off for 3 months to visit teak door but I haven't been successful yet.


Rather than trying to move over to another board, you might better spend your time changing the blue theme or finding an all new theme to use.

I like this board and layout 100%.

To change to another board that is less 'straightforward'...would probably be the best way to get me to cut down on my posting or get rid of me.

I like *£$%^%*£$%^%*£$%^%*£$%^%*£$%^%*£$%^%*£$%^%*£$%^%, and many of the posters...but really dislike their board...

Well, there are one or two functionality issues that I have a problem with curently, but they're mostly admin issues.

Please get people to make their votes heard here as I'm very keen to get all opinions.

im no computer whiz but i find teak door difficult to track at times. would you be willing to provide a brief description of the benefits of the propsed software over the current one? thanks
