having spoken to a uni in the uk, they told me my wifes bachelor degree from here was the equivalent to the first year of a BA in the uk.
she spent 4 year doing her degree. if we had gone to the uk as originally planed she would have needed to do another 3 years at uni there to allow her do do something other than wash pots in a thai restaurant.

We have a friend with a masters in biology who was only being paid 7000 baht plus a one room apartment to lecture in biology at a well known BKK university. So she left and now has an executive job with a major resort and gets 20,000 plus an apartment and car and food allowance.
Another friend is a senior lecturer with a govt university which only offers Thai staff 15,000 baht plus a 10,000 baht housing allowance - and she says that's fairly high for Thais (farangs get more).
As someone said, how do people pay for all those new cars and pickups running around? No wonder the place is said to be swash with consumer debt.
If 6 of the 7 dwarves were not Happy, does that prove that dwarves are generally an unhappy lot?

You got that right, the banks have been handing out credit cards like candy and Ive yet to meet a Thai that really understood the hole theyve dug for themselves.

In a year or so this countries financial institutions are going to be up shits creek.

Girlfriend works in a 5* hotel. Has a lot of restaurant experience and is old for thai standards -in terms of hospitality and tourism (34) -as a supervisor in a Japanese rest. -speaks good English and fair Japanese -earns between 18 -24 thou. amonth depending on hotel service charge. Comparatively well-paid probably -but after 4.5 years in Ireland she's occassionally unhappy with it. It's not so much the money but the deference one has to show to 'superiors'. Even without my income she'd have a decent financial standard of living but it galls her to have to smile when she feels like saying 'f*** off'. She told her old boss in Ireland to p*ss off when required and reqularly it was -but he'd eventually realise he was being a prick and treat her like a human being. I think sometimes I (we) forget that we've a lot more in common than what divides us culturally -pass the incense.

I hear you, the Hotel industry is a tuff gig, and I have a lot of respect for the people that do it well.

Its funny, the more stars the more bitter the guests seem to be.

Dont get angry mate but why is her salary so low in a 5 star hotel? A former private student who has a vocational college degree works at the Sheraton Royal Orchid as a airconditioning tech, he gets 14,000 baht a month for a 45 hour week. But works 50 so he gets 16,000. His share of the income pool is never below 6,000 baht a month and higher Dec, Jan, Feb, and March.

He barely speaks english but tries damn hard and is 25 years old.

The point being Mac Don your girlfriend is being underpaid. I am chair of the English for Tourism and Hotel Management classes at my uni so I do know the going rate for wages.

There is a high labor turnover rate in BKK hotels, I suggest you encourage your girfriend to find a better postion.

If that's true (I think highly unlikely) then that must include serious tips.
