Re: Non-Imm B Visa run to Vientiane with pics

Just returned from Vientiane to obtain a single entry TV. Easy and painless. Dropped off passport Monday, quite busy, approx 200+ people and picked up next day at 1.15pm had to wait 15 mins. Mate got a double entry no probs. I quite like Vientiane. Food is great and beer cheap, nice and relaxed place.

Re: Non-Imm B Visa run to Vientiane with pics

Did you see me by any chance? I was the youngest of the 200+ people

I set off by VIP bus from Mo Chit at 8:30pm on sunday. My bus was bound for Nong Khai and came to a pricey 715 baht.

From the side of the road I took a tuk tuk who ignored my request to go to the border and dropped me off at a dodgy visa travel agency. He didnt get paid for his trouble. Too knackered to argue I paid 2000 baht at the travel agency. That got me 36 usd, the forms for the visa, a lift to the border, a lift from the border to the embassy in Vientiane and a Lift from the embassy to downtown Vientiane by the river.

I followed the advice of a German guy I met at the embassy and stayed at a reasonable hotel by the river. The hotel room had a shower with hot water, cable tv, a fridge and air con - not bad for 10 usd.

The visa process itself was exactly like everyone else before me has said - painfree They did seem to have a crazy system at the embassy though. queue for ages and submit your passport and forms outside. Them queue for ages again inside and pay.

On my way to collect my passport from the embassy yesterday, I met a friendly Laos bloke and he gave me a lift in the back of his pick up to the embassy. Ha take that tuk tuk drivers!

After collecting my passport I ignored the long line of tuk tuks and walked to the bus station. 80b bought a bus ticket from Vientiane to Udon. That seemed like quite a bargain

From Udon I paid 440 baht for a "vip" bus to Bangkok. Vip turned out to mean air conditioned with no leg room I left Udon at 8pm and after a loooong journey with very little sleep made it back to Mo Chit at 5:30am. Next time I will take the train - lesson learned.

Re: Non-Imm B Visa run to Vientiane with pics

^ Can't remember seeing anyone really young pal but that said it was pretty busy and F'ing hot too. I really couldn't face the overnight bus so my mate and I flew Nok air tom Udon. From there its 150 baht by minivan to the border. Once in Laos we ignored the Tuk Tuks and walked to the main road and some friendly local folk let us ride in the back of their truck for free, we just helped them carry their shopping into the house.

We didn't have any digs arranged as the whole trip was hastily arranged. I made a beeline for the Mali Namphu as I'd stayed there before but it was "dem leaw". Next door was OK but met a couple of fit English birds who said there was a decent place opposite their budget hotel so we checked it out. Hotel was brand new and cost $29 for a spacious A/C twin room with full Sat TV incl b/fast. Good location too. On the corner about 200 yards away was the Tex Mex restaurant next to the river (well, river bed)

Can anyone tell me -- is transport available directly from the Udon Thani airport to the Lao border, or to you have to go from the airport to central Udon Thani and then find transport on to the border from there?

Re: Non-Imm B Visa run to Vientiane with pics

The airport limousine (minivan) runs direct from the airport to the border and costs 150 baht approx 50 mins. The ticket office is on your way out next to the exit, you can't miss it. Everytime a flight arrives at Udon, a minivan leaves. The return leg however is not the same. On return into Thailand you have to make your own way to the Thai airways office in Nong Khai to catch the minivan back to the airport. The office is on your right side on the main road only 2km from the border. Ignore the fools and catch a tuk tuk cost 20/30 baht. The return ticket to the airport costs 120 baht.

Phone number for airport shuttle is 015443622 & 042411530 but not sure which is which for the airport office or Nong Khai office.

Hope this helps

That's some funny stuff there, mate! It is nice to get one over on them once in a while.

I take the train up it provides opportunity to stretch my legs, get something to drink, and meet new blokes in the dining car.
