2 month Thai Tourist Visa from Vientiane in Laos 2 months

Hi,

Got a job teaching job just outside of Bangkok. Been told I need to go to Thai Embassy in Vientiane in Laos for a 2 month tourist visa. This gives the company more time to work on my docs and work permit as I only have a short time left on my present visa. Anyone had to do this or know about this?

Maybe I'm being dumb matt but how can your school "work" on your work permit if you don't have a nonB visa?

Re: 2 month Thai Tourist Visa from Vientiane in Laos 2 months

Sunbelt asia summed it up nicely in some other thread. You cannot work without a work permit.
In the past, it has been the case where schools, immigration and the labour office have taken the best part of 3 months to sort out your paperwork........and of course everyone was working during that time.
Seems like the times, they are a-changin though.
I had a friend who's work wouldnt let her in the building til the WP was in their office. Too risky they said. They let her stay at home on full pay for the 10 days or so it takes to process everything.

See - they can do it quickly if they want to.
Its bollox to suggest it takes months to process - they are hving you on mate, and if you get caught, the buck stops with you.
Chances of getting caught are low, but you need to be aware of the letter of the law - and it now seems to be being applied a little more
Good Luck

I'd assume maybe they're going to go the convert route....although they could well just be lying!!!

Not strictly true (although in this case the following most likely won't apply): British Council and other err goverment things don't need a work permit, a Non-imm F covers them to work here (and they don't have to pay tax). Aussies (possibly only students....I'm not 100% sure) can get a Visa that covers them to work but only for 3 months at a certain place.

Ish....we're doing one now and it's still slow to be honest (around a month and a half if not longer).

Teaching? Chances of being caught are almost non-existent and if it's being processed they'll generally let it slide (in regards to teaching anyway).

Re: 2 month Thai Tourist Visa from Vientiane in Laos 2 months

It seems that employers are tightening up on this as I was recently told by my boss that all teachers had to have work permits, and anyone caught working (teaching) on a tourist visa would be fired - even the branch director can be sacked for hiring someone with a toursist visa ...apparently.

These are sad times we are living in when an honest, hard working teacher on 30k a month with a fake degree and a 30 day tourist visa in his passport can't do an honest days' work.

Re: 2 month Thai Tourist Visa from Vientiane in Laos 2 months

Mat can do the visa conversion at Suan Plu but it takes about a month to process. If his tourist visa is that short, he'll need to extend it for the interim. They'll issue a non-B for 3 months on the basis of which he can get a 3 month WP.

Then it's back to Suan Plu to extend for the remaining 9 months, and back to the Labour Bureau for the WP coverage.

Am I right Ken?

My company also said that new teachers have to submit their passport, degree and TEFL before they will even issue a letter applying for a Non-B - why would they do that? Is it a requirement that to get a Non-B you have to have a bachelor's degree?

Not at all but it certainly appears you do not.

Your company, the one you work for? You have lost me in just a few posts.

I have my company as well, but its nothing to do with my job, my visa, or my work permit.

R2 what it the point you are trying to make? Its okay to just come out and say it, this is cyberspace.

Maybe not, but they're possibly trying to cover their butts by supplying as much paper as they can. Certainly my BA was submitted as part of the large bundle of paper (each sheet signed by me) to support my application.

Re: 2 month Thai Tourist Visa from Vientiane in Laos 2 months

I mean 'my company' as in the company I work for. Sorry for the confusion.

The point I am trying to make is that schools are tightening up on their requirements for foreign teachers. Now you have to have a degree and a TEFL (and a job of course) just to get a work permit, AND those documents have to be original and verifiable. Maybe there will be a requirement soon to have a non-criminal record verification from one's embassy.

The walls are closing in on all the 'fake degree/toursist visa' brigade.
