Thanks, Aquaman. I agree that's the best option. I'll contact immigration. Probably the best thing would be to call the actual border post I'll be going to. Despite a lot of people's complaints about Thai bureaucracy (much of it quite justified), I'm sure they can give an accurate answer for something like this.

UPDATE: It IS possible to get a re-entry permit at any land border crossing. No hassle at all. There are even ATMs at the border at Hat Lek now and lots of new development.
