Tomcat Eats OutThe best restaurant reviews. Mainly by Tomcat but we'll move any well written reviews here too.
As ever, sponsored by the very lovely Chris at Oh My Cod!
I know this place has 6 pages of comments already. SD and I decided to try it out to see if there is Tex-Mex in BKK I can actually stomach.
We had a wonderful time. In the middle of a raging typhoon, we sat outside on a narrow sidewalk under protective awnings, enjoying a sunrise salad (the stuff you would normally find in tacos and burritos, without same: lettuce, black beans, salsa, grilled chicken and-yes, I splurged-the 69 baht spoonful of guacamole. Tasty, fresh and perfect with my first Margarita. SD wasn't so lucky as his 3 soft corn tacos were soggy and, as he attempted the third, had to drain the shell. Still hungry, and in need of something to accompany my second and third Margaritas, we tried the 3 burrito plate with grilled chicken (I don't do beef) and, yes!, 69 baht guacamole on each blessed piece. They were deeply satisfying. I have to say that John's special salsa, while not the best I've ever had, was at the precise thermal degree I like. As the storm was still raging not 12 inches from where we sat, we decided to sit it out with a bowl of "special" corn chips and salsa. These were the least appealing, but freshly fortified with my half-yardstick of Margaritas, who cared?
I had a brief chat with the friendly owner about the state of TexMex cuisine in BKK. He was reluctant to bad-mouth his competition so I agreed to do it for him here. It sucks.
One really entertaining aspect of our luncheon al fresco was the endearing lack of organization when it came to verifying orders, adding up the checkbins, and finally paying. You know I've been drinking if I'm patient with that sort of thing in a restaurant.
The place is claustrophobic if more than 6 people are eating, but the food is worth braving the heaving masses for. So far, this is the only Tex-Mex place I'd visit again....if only for the Margaritas.

The owner thought it might have been run-off from the lettuce....poor show on that order.
The restaurant should have the standard plastic device that removes the water from salad by spinning it at a high rate. A good one costs about 700 baht.
I purchased one after hearing a chef say that if he had to choose three kitchen implements, one of his choices was a salad spinner. It really does remove the water thats makes a dressing watery.

Please excuse me for digging up a rather old thread, but I saw with interest on the pull-down menu on this forum that Tomcat likes eating out. Well, enjoying food myself (a lot of different kinds...and a lot sometimes more than I should), I thought I would look at Tomcat's eating out experiences.
I scrolled down the list to see what I recognized and this was the first one. What drew me to Sunrise Tacos was a friend of mine who gave me an e-mail that said you could get a one kilo burrito I think it was. Anyways, I enjoyed the half kilo burrito along with a tasty margarita.
Here's to Sunrise Tacos, the director of Sunbelt Asia here and to the hosting of Thaivisa Forum. This guy's really gone far in the short time he's been here in Thailand.
