Tomcat Eats OutThe best restaurant reviews. Mainly by Tomcat but we'll move any well written reviews here too.
As ever, sponsored by the very lovely Chris at Oh My Cod!
...on Sukhumvit 53 about 200m in on the left (an easy walk from the Thong Lo bts). This is the new, more up-market effort by the owner of Basilico on soi 33. Judging by the menu prices,I would guess he's aiming at the market space now occupied by Zanotti's and Opera. SD and I were given a tour of the new restaurant: spacious, airy and with the promise of light entertainment after 10 pm for those who want to linger with another glass of wine. That sounds like a very good idea.
SD started with an eggplant lasagna. This could easily have been an entree due to its richness. Heavy on flavorful cheese and eggplant and very light on sauce, it went very well with a glass of Centine Banfi Toscana, a cab-sauv merlot blend that is excellent, though pricey (B350 a glass). I had the light and tasty tuna tartare served with thin slices of toast...and a mayonnaise sauce (drizzled around it) that was totally unnecessary.
We moved on to try their pizza: mozzarella di bufala, pesto and grilled shrimp. It was an interesting combination of pizza toppings that worked very well together. Those familiar with Basilico's pizza will recognize the same high quality work here. The base was perfect, not sodden or overloaded with toppings, but thin with a slight crispness.
I predict we will be regulars here just as we are at Basilico and for that reason I'll be adding to this thread as we try more menu items. This place is worth a visit.
Check-bin: B1900 (including 3 glasses of wine, one mentioned above and two more at B250 each) for a great lunch with excellent service.

I walked by it today on the way to see a close friend. It must be expecting big things as they have designated and marked 2 or 3 places. TC is right though its a nice walk down a nice soi, from the BTS, 5 minutes max. Remember to get off to the rear of the train.
I will never go, but a really nice review. Thanks TC
Reminds me of the Chronicle back home in SF, the good reviews were on Sunday as well.

Thanks TC, another good foody review! You're making me hungry with the buffulo milk cheese pizzas again! Do you ever drink the good Aussie wines? Or are they prohibitively expensive in BKK?

Of course you've got to keep these things in perspective, eh.
I mean, how many bottles of Chang could you drink in a cheap lowlife bar for 1900 baht?

AO: just by ordering more carefully, a family of four could easily eat for B1900 (if price is the reason you'd never go).
Big B: Can you recommend some quality Australian wines available locally? I've tried a number of them in the B600-B800 range that were disappointing.
BenB: As far as I know, proprietors love me because I order from their wine lists with total abandon. Nobody knows my identity as reviewer extraordinaire on Ajarn.com.
Thank you all for your kind feedback.

Its not the price TC, its kids who love daddy's cooking and compare all they eat outside the house to what I make. Sure the restaurants are better a lot of the time. But not in two kids eyes. They only just turned 10 so their taste buds will mature in the future as mine did.

^gotta agree with that. Papa on the otherhand, likes to eat out for new ideas in my kitchen.
kids and wife are away, I'm on my way right now.

Back,
I follow suite with the wine, the tuscana, only 1 glass as it was noon and i was driving. For a starter I had the smoked salmon on lightly toasted whole wheat. I have had better smoked salmon, nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it...
Then, I had the spinach manacotti. That was priceless. The cream sauce, spinach filling, and even the shell, or especially the shell.
Thanks TC, will be taking the wife when she gets back to town.

Anything red or white from Jacob's Creek, Wolf Blass, Houghtons, or Rosemount Estate. These are all common but fine tasting labels in the 400-800B/bottle range (supermarket prices). If you see something on the winelist and are not sure, write it down, and let me know. I will give you my biased and experienced opinion!

....a glass of Wolf Blass raised in your honor this weekend...
Tomcat, you will taste the nectar of the gods, for sure!
In 2004, Mr Wolf Blass was a victim of his own product, and crashed his Rolls Royce into a tree while pissed- (don't know if it was his red or his white). But WB (not William Blake this time), is one of Aussie's finest!! You and the SD enjoy-OK?

As SD is out of town, I stopped in for a solo lunch today. For starters, I tried a tasting platter of various flatbread sandwiches (panini) and crostini. The serving was huge and half of it sits in my fridge right now waiting to be microwaved for dinner. Seven varieties of pita bread and Italian loaf white bread with toppings and fillings: spinach and fontina overlaid with crispy bacon, parma ham and provola cheese, grilled bread with a spicy tomato salsa topping and others I haven't tried yet. The couple at the next table (up from Penang) were impressed enough to lean over and congratulate me on my order, asking about names and flavors. Everything I tasted was delicious.
I should have left at that moment, but I had already ordered baked snapper on a bed of spinach in a light "Mediterranean" sauce (mushrooms and black olives): the fish was succulent and perfectly cooked, though I think some tomatoes and capers would have helped the sauce. I forget the name of the wine, but it's the only one on the list at B250 a glass.
B1400 for lunch with enough left over for dinner. I will definitely have to waddle more aggressively on the treadmill next week.

The few times a year I get to Adelaide to see my accountant I try to make it a friday afternoon as my accountant owns the building called 'wolf blass house'. Mr Wolf still has his operations in the building and regularly puts on friday arfo drinkies
