Tomcat Eats OutThe best restaurant reviews. Mainly by Tomcat but we'll move any well written reviews here too.
As ever, sponsored by the very lovely Chris at Oh My Cod!
On Sukhumvit, soi 53 (about 700m in) at the intersection with Thong Lor, soi 9. Here's a restaurant with something for everybody: hiso prices, loso service, and so-so cuisine. The chef declares he doesn't do fusion, preferring to be creative and prepare traditional dishes using non-traditional methods and ingredients. Hence, SD and I, ordering the set menu, were treated to overcooked spaghetti in curry sauce (as opposed to the promised "penne in pesto"...apparently a traditional Indian dish). The tandoori chicken, again part of the set menu, was dry and stringy enough for me to floss with. The main part of the meal was the ubiquitous chicken tikka masala and dal with garlic nan. These were fine (the chef, not uncommonly for northern Indians, forswears the use of ghee, substituting only a few drops of oil as needed), if incredibly minute portions. The dessert was mango sorbet, tasty and smooth.
The prices for a la carte were astronomical for Indian food. I don't know who their clientele is, but they are either uninformed or plain stupid. For a glass of medium quality French wine, B395; for a poorer quality Australian, B290. Outrageous. The waitstaff were oblivious. Once the food was served, they were off-duty, though busily arranging plates, napkins, and each other's hair. For the first time in memory, I left an Indian restaurant still hungry.
Recommendation: India Today or India Hut are far better value and much better food preparation. We left this restaurant with the feeling that we had somehow been taken in by crafty sub-continentals.
B1100 with 2 glasses of wine.

So never again for you, SD, and a host of Ajarn readers. Stupid Red Restaurant!
There are 2 Indian restaurants which have recently opened here in Kunming, and they are both severely overpriced, and I suspect geared towards local Chinese tastes, rather than authentic.
I could cook better Tandori in my wok!!
The search for a quick Baht, Yuan, or Dollar will be short lived.
I look forward to your other Indian restaurant reviews TC!

I don't like the long red dew-rag things the waiters seem to wear.
Creepy.
Then again I've only seen them through the waterfall-window thing
(which must be what people are paying for there).
the only hi-so neighborhood restaurant that piques my curiosity is Andaman.
been there TC? lemme check yr section...
oh, and the italian place half way up the soi (53) looks good. i only say that because
it seems there's 10,000 baht worth of olive oil out on the tables at all times! yum!
The owner of the above restaurant is one of my very good friend from high school. Don't worry, I am not going to defend her busienss.
I haven't been there actually but it already has a reputation for being very pricy even amongst old friends. Mix reviews regarding food amongst friends though (perhaps they are kreng jai...as our friend is a terribly lovely girl). I will be seeing her on Sunday, will see if I can tell her what people think about her restaurant.
