I have been comming on this site for a few months now and am flying out to Thailand in Jan. I would like to say there are many helpful people on this site but at the same time there are some truly ignornant people on this site and I am getting fed up!
I was born and brought up in the UK and AM A BRITISH CITIZEN but am of Pakistani ORIGIN. I understand Thais will look at me and presume I am fresh from india/pakistan until they hear me speak. Fine I can understand that it may be a bit difficult for me to win over the Thais as I look Asian.
However some people make me laugh on this site
1/why do u presume I have a Pakistani accent even though I grew up in Berkshire and went to GRAMMER school? Is it that anyone with a brown face can never truly be British?
2/ Why do people presume because I am of Pakistani decent my actual command of English isn't any good? In fact I would say I have much better language skills than most as I can speak FOUR languages: English, hindi, urdu and french ok?!
3/ Stop fuking pm constantly and telling me 'pakis' wont get work in Thailand - and no point naming people but u know who I am talking about!
4/ Start learning to respect the countries you are in! As a British Asian I am constantly suffering racism and ignorance, whether its thru the media, institutions or the indiviudual! AND I AM MENT TO BE BRITISH THATS WHAT IT SAYS ON MA PASSPORT. Maybe ur getting a taste of your own medicine?!
Now unless u got something positive to say dnt pm me wankers (this is targeted at some of u not ALL LOL!)

Like any "closed" society there is a fair bit of racism in Thailand. If people were just trying to tell you that, then you shouldn't take it too personally.
I think it is also the case that there's quite a few people on the forum who will often "poke fun" at other cultures, but really it's mainly done in jest (at least in my opinion)
When you've been "overseas" for a few years poking fun like this is kind of like an escape valve, the unfamiliarity and unpredictability of things just starts to get to everyone after awhile. Don't take these things seriuosly, I can see how you might, but don't.
As far as personal P.M.'s, well that's a different matter and if anyone was offensive in a P.M. then I for one would wish to apologize to you.

Nabs, I've been appalled at the racism, sexism, and homophobia on this site for years. It's nothing new, and the most consistent thing about forum policy towards it has been inconsistency. In their favour, MOST of the forum members have their hearts in the right place- and at least a FEW of the offenders are simply trolls and wind-up artists who probably don't care what their real political opinions are, as long as it gets a reaction on the forum.
At the moment, there appears to be at least lip service towards controlling the yobs. If someone's misbehaving too badly, report them- but don't be surprised if that gets some of the mods and members referring to you as a "whiner," "complainer," "crybaby," or even worse. Good luck.

Hey thanks for the reply people! sorry if i was a bit rude, I was kinda annoyed! I appreciate the advice that I may find it more difficult to get work - I totally understand that- bt some of the more insulting comments did kinda annoy me - its easy to make rude comments on a forum don't think most of them would have the guts to say it face to face - what is this?
