US Clampdown: 72 Hours Notice!

Respond
Opening question
US security clampdown: 72 hours' notice required from British visitors James Orr and agencies guardian.co.uk, Tuesday June 3 2008 Article history Travellers from 27 countries including Britain will be required to register online with US authorities at least three days before leaving to visit America, it will be announced today. This latest measure aimed at bolstering American security is expected to take effect from January. Last year, European companies expressed concern when the US homeland security department floated proposals to make passengers register with US authorities 48 hours before travel. Critics feared this could complicate last-minute business arrangements. The introduction of the new 72-hour notice period will be announced by the homeland security secretary, Michael Chertoff, later today, according to a US government official. The rules will apply to citizens of the 27-nation visa waiver scheme. This includes most of western Europe as well as Australia, Brunei, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Although the measure will require registration 72 hours before travelling, successful applications will be valid for multiple entries over two years. Passengers will be able to register in advance from August this year through travel agents, airline websites or through a special US government website. No problem here really. If the US wants to impose these regulations then isn't it fair game for all other countries to reciprocate with exactly the same regulations? I think so. You can't have you cake and eat it to. Just imagine poor Condoleeza or Duck Cheney having to apply seventy two hours before one of their "peace keeping" foray's somewhere on the planet. These current stock of American government folks never ever fail to dissapoint.
Respond
Too right, whats good for the goose is good for the gander however, I hope other countries don't feel compelled to lower themselves to these new lows... Surely, the inconvenience factor can be balanced through other smarter more benefical measures like trade negotiations or anything that will benefit these countries.

Naw, hit im where it hurts and quickly. And send them a very clear message that if the American people want to stay at home, with their heads stuck up their collective asses, then go for it. When o when are our American friends going to get their shit together and take control of their own country back. Sheesh! I don't understand the US of A anymore. Used to, but not no more. Nosureee.

And the world thought China was bad and communism was dead. As usual the sad American leaders have screwed it all up again.Control freaks gone ballistic. What has happened to Audie Murphy I ask ? Bring Audie Murphy back, then America can sleep soundly at night.

So ashamed of my country's government. Moronic, they just don't get it. I hope if Obama is elected he shit cans the whole Homeland Security department and puts something sensible in place that is not run by paranoid war mongers. Respond
What's the big deal? You need to register 72 hours in advance and that is good for two years. Remember this applies only to those countries where a visa is not required. Where is the indignation about requiring a visa from citizens of all of the other countries? I suspect that this is being introduced to have a chance to better screen those coming from countries where visas are not required. I don't see anything wrong with a step that would keep ppotential terrorists out of the country, and there are many in countries for which visas are not required. I am pretty sure that any businessman who has any possibility of traveling to a foreign country would have no problem with a little advance planning. When America introduced fingerprints or whatever the procedure for arriving passengers was, Brazil reciprocated and required the same of Americans visiting Brazil. And what was the response from the US government? Basically, as I understand, it was that, of course, Brazil should impose whatever measures they feel are necessary and warranted - no problem.

Yes, Brazil has been one of the only countries to quickly enact reciprocal entrance policy but they are not a major trading partner with the US. Not sure about this but I doubt they are on the list of the 27-nation visa waiver scheme either. I was thinking more of European countries and others that the US does a lot of business with. I toned down my OP a notch, I was a little quick on the draw with the profanity and all. But, I still see this as another small step towards creating a police state that will benefit the elite rich and corporations who want a 'new world order'. When I first read 1984 by Orwell I was like 'good book but it will never happen' now I'm not so sure. The pieces are being put into place one by one and now it doesn't seem so far fetched. OK, end of conspiracy theory rant. [image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/grin.gif]

Like I'd ever want to go there!
Respond
I just wonder if the countries on the list will reciprocate. I remember many years ago when British citizens needed a visa to visit the US, the reverse situation didn't apply. I can see the same thing happening here.

The Canadian Government has restrictions that far surpass what's being talked about in this thread IMO. Going to Canada? Check your Past : Tourists with minor criminal records turned back at border (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/02/23/MNGCAO9NSB1.DTL) Persons who are inadmissible to Canada Members of Inadmissible Classes include those who have been convicted of MINOR OFFENCES (including shoplifting, theft, assault, dangerous driving, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of illegal substances, etc.), or of INDICTABLE CRIMINAL OFFENCES (including assault with a deadly weapon, manslaughter, etc.). As well, those who have been convicted of DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED (DWI) are considered Members of an Inadmissible Class. Driving while under the influence of alcohol is regarded as an extremely serious offence in Canada. The lesson, the attorneys say, is that if you must travel to Canada, you should apply for "a Minister's Approval of Rehabilitation" (if that's not Orwellian I don't know what is) to wipe the record clear. Oh, and by the way, if you don't need to travel to Canada, don't think you won't need to clear your record. Lesperance says it is just a matter of time before agreements are signed with governments in destinations like Japan, Indonesia and Europe. Pot, meet Kettle. Oh, and love the Audie Murphy reference. I used to use his photo as an avatar. He's a Texan, dontchaknow.

^ Yea Charlie. All these Canadian restrictions are relatively new and have been in direct response to American initiatives in the same area. It's a bit of a tit-for-tat battle between the two governments at the moment. Been going on since 9/11. Don't know where it will end but it's really knocking the shit out of the Canadian tourist industry (along with the high dollar CDN ,of course)

Not true. During my trip across the major leagues in 2000, I spent hours at the Canadian border. Every piece luggage was searched. We had documents showing purpose, press credentials, etc... We were driving a 1998 Lincoln Town Car, well groomed, polite, and yet those bastards chose to put us through the third degree. Strange... Regarding the new US restrictions, yeah they appear to be overkill, but it also appears that people still want to come to the US illegally, stay beyond their return date, and generally suck on the government trough...and of course the millions of militant mussies who want to create havoc. In the end, it's just another opportunity for a bunch of losers to bash the good old US of A.
