I bought myself one of those HP Mini-notebooks a few months ago because I was sick of dragging around something that weighed the equivalent of six house-bricks.
The machine is all geared up to use wi-fi or so it seems. Whenever I'm in a company office or a coffee shop, it finds a signal and then usually a password box or something similar appears. I don't use it to surf the net when I'm out and about in Bangkok though so I don't take things any further.
However, I'll be going back to the UK for a couple of weeks in October and it would be nice not to rely on using my sister-in-law's laptop. They have wi-fi in their house. Is it likely that I will be able to use their signal and surf the net using my machine?
I've asked my brother this question four times and keep getting a 'don't know' or 'I thinks so'

Yes, you can use their wifi. SD set it up in my apartment so he can surf while watching TV...while I'm on the desk top in another room...I wouldn't do any internet banking, however...SD says that may be risky...
you won't have any trouble at all connecting to your family's wifi network. Your HP Mini will recognize it, and (if they have it properly set up) you will see a password dialogue box when when you click on it. They give you the password and you are in. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. BTW, it won't matter even if they are Mac people, network will be open to anyone with the password.
definitely take the mini on the road when you travel.

Yes, Phil, no problem. When you get to your sister-in-law's, switch the laptop on and do a search for available wireless connections. It will find her wifi signal as well as others in the street (hers will doubtless be the strongest signal). Log on to her wifi using her password - if she has set one up - and away you go! If she hasn't set up password protection remind her that it's useful as some other bugger will undoubtedly be using her connection otherwise and for free.
If you're really desperate for your ajarn fix you can log on free at Starbucks just as you can in Thailand. Connection's faster too.

Usually bank web sites are protected after logging in, TC, but you're right, you can't be too careful.

Yes it is a crap question I know, but I get very confused by the whole wi-fi / bluetooth / blackberry / I-phone stuff. I guess I'm just lazy to do the research. I'm all for anything that makes life simple.
