Ok foodies, the wife is all about steak. Her ever expanding girth demands the consumption of steak at regular intervals. With this in mind, where is the best steak to be had in Bangkok? I am thinking a meal for two costing no more than 5000 baht (with a couple of glasses of wine). I think the Marriott New York Steakhouse is a tad out of my league, so has anyone else got any suggestions of a good (imported) steak place?
Also, while we are on it, can anyone recommend a good Thai restaurant in the 2-3000 baht price range?
It is far to early to be asking these questions on New Years Day, but that is the cards we are dealt - I was sober last night and in bed at 10:30. I must be getting old.

Let me add that my 200 baht a day food budget has precluded me from ever eating there.
at 5k baht that's far more than i'm typically willing to spend. i'm sure someone will jump in here and say Chok Chai; (http://www.farmchokchai.com/en/index_content.php?content_id=57) i haven't been there actually. prices are in line, typically well under your limit if menu is accurate. they farm their own beef so it can't be horrid. i've heard ugly rumors about the veggies, but who the hell goes to a sateak house for the veggies anyway.
my favorite is Ko Khun. (http://www.ko-khun.com/) there's one on Sriwara and i think the one on lower Ratchada. big open-air place, easy to spot for the big cow on the sign. they have their own farm, too. usually though rather than a nicely cut steak, we grill. the cuts of meat available for grilling tend to be lower grade than the steaks, and they freeze the thinly-sliced meat (it's not frozen when you get it, but you can tell). very very good beef though. and they have a green sour lime sauce that i love. one word of caution though: they give you this horrible margarine to grill in. it's probably worth it, if you're going to grill, to bring your own butter. (never thought to ask 'em if they have butter actually, you may be able to buy it there). it's not very posh or very formal so if you want wine you'll have to bring it. i don't know if there's a corkage fee, i'm quite happy do quaff a Beer Lao with my sateak. as you can no doubt see from the website they target Thais, not foreigners, so it's a little different from what we're used to beef-restaurant-wise. the upside though is their somtam is pretty good (i'm really fussy about somtam because My Intended makes it fresh at home, and because i hate those nasty little crabs they put in it yet it doesn't taste right if you leave 'em out when you make it). typical price: under 1000 per visit, including beer, for grilling.
for a more traditional western steak, i'm pretty happy with the Argentine ribeyes we got from the Livingstone. (http://www.livingstones.co.th/) as an added bonus for those in BKK they deliver via chefsxp.com. this is standard white people food: you get your choice of potato stylin's, sauce, and it comes with grilled veggies. you also have a choice of sauces for the steak but i prefer mine naked with a pinch of salt if the meat's good. price for Argy ribeyes: 1,500, not including wine
i've not tried too many other western-style places (specifically, not tried Neil's) but from what i hear, if a place has Aussie steak on the menu you'll do alright to order it. hard to screw up a decent piece of meat.
there are some pretty good options around Ratchada 14 for grilling beef Korean-style if you're interested (and if they're still there, it's been a while).
there may be places i've missed (or forgotten, in some cases mercifully) but to my eye that sums up the decent steaks on the low end. having far worse luck with pizza so far; just tried the highly touted Bella Napoli, it was ok but i wasn't impressed.
that ko khun is nice... and a good price range for beef. We have ordered a few smaller steaks with our meals, but I don't recall and proper steaks like T-bones, fillets, etc... No wine, but bear lao and bear lao dark is always a good runner up
as for another restaurant, Ob Oroi is a Thai seafood joint in the Ramkhamhaeng area... really good food for the price. Even with 6 adults and 3 kids, we couldn't break 3000 baht on the bill...
Last night we went to Ruen peh in Nongjok, again a Thai seafood restaurant... excellent... and 1700 for 5 adults and 3 kids...

Ob Aroi is right next door on Sriwara now. they moved from their tatty location on Lad Prao 94 into a rather nice place next to the only tall-ish office building on Sriwara. first time i tried Ob Aroi i had grilled prawns and was unimpressed with their green chili sauce. still unimpressed with that particular sauce but i've tried other things since and they've got some excellent stuff at good prices (even a simple crab fried rice is surprisingly interesting). Big Sister is an extremely fussy eater when it comes to Thai food and she likes it enough that it's become the place to go for when the whole herd's in Bangkok (you'd think when you start dating an orphan that you'd have fewer relatives to deal with, but no). doubt they have steaks though. gotten out of there rather cheaply, yeh, and the pricier items are still reasonably priced. i'd recommend taking a taxi even if you have a car though as parking there is shit.
Ko Khun definitely have some sort of steaks but i dont' know if they're prepared in a way that we'd recognize as steak. never tried e'm and the place is VERY Thai-oriented (thankfully so though; that green lime juice sauce seems pretty unique). they do let you bring wine, and didn't charge me a corkage but they're used to seeing me twice a month (the Sriwara branch) so i'm not sure they didn't cut me some slack. it's rarely been over a 1000 for 2 for grilling (unless you order lots of beer).
Thanks folks. I was aiming for the 'imported' steak option. We have some steak houses close to me, I have eaten KU beef (supposedly the best Thai beef), but none match a good imported steak.
I will try the Neil's Tavern I think. I would love to do the Marriott, maybe I can afford it at the end of the long, long semester that is about to start...
speaking of imported steak, anyone know of a place to get it mail order? in the US you can mail order some very good steaks (the good ones aren't cheap, but still)...
unfortunately none of those places deliver here.
CentralWorld 7th floor, inside Tops Supermarket, next to Mrs Balbirs deli counter. Good steaks at good prices. You can choose your meat cut and they cook it while you watch. Good place to have a decent meal after shopping. Love their Salmon steak at 199 baht.
I had a craving for pizza a week or two ago & went to Scoozi at Ratchayothin. My wife ordered some kind of steak which was really excellent. It was quite rare and very tender.[image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/beerchug.gif] I don't remember the bill, but it was no-where near 3,000.

I will look forward to your review as they are always intersting. However, if you go to a steak place and order a hamburger, french fries, and a coke you are going to get flamed again. Not by me of course . . I'm thinking of the italian restaurant review.

Indigo in Silom do great little steaks... Their lunch deals (330++) are hard to beat. 2 courses, and a glass of wine or two will be less than 1k.
This is a stupid question, but I was at Siam Discovery yesterday and was wondering if Outback Steakhouse is any good?

Neil's Tavern have similar lunch deals (but their website is vague about the rest of their prices).
Try Bourbon Street, Washington Square. Southern American style and very good steaks. Check out their web-site!
