For me it's cucumbers. Yesterday, I mistakenly bit into one of the little demons amidst the euphoria of a fresh tuna salad. I was heaving all the way to Heave Street in Heave City in the United States of Heaving.
And why are they 97% water? What's the point of that 3% that does nothing but needlessly distort the taste? For example, when God made man he didn't give him 3% woman that has him gossiping on the phone for 90 minutes about nothing or going shopping and buying Ryvitas and Tofu instead of bread and bacon.
No, he made him 100% man. That's why we're perfect. [image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/beerchug.gif]
Anyway, cucumbers: eurgh.
Which seemingly innocuous food has you praying to the porcelain God?
RespondWhy do you get sick from them?
I like em on my veggie dogs with lots of deli mustard
I just can't stomach the taste.
My back-side does all the praying. I'm fine with most food apart from those DIY bbq's. Maybe I'm not cooking the meat thoroughly enough or using far too much of that delicious chilly sauce that comes with the set, whichever, next day, November 5th eat ye heart out.
Outback pork chops had me out of action for a week with horrible, horrible pain.
I had to stay within 25 metres of a toilet at all times.
Lasagna from the school cafeteria.
Haven't eaten it since.
Spinach had me hurling last week, after a overdoing the champagne.
I'm staying well away from spinach - but won't give up on the champagne just yet.

Good to see you have your priorities right Cyrille!

a true bloomin onion.
Outback "steakhouse" in Siam discovery Centre.
7/11 hotdogs
^ Ugh, and any of those sausages on sticks dipped in sugary sauce.
Yuk.
Not sure they qualify as 'innocuous' though.
How to take a fine (junk) food and needlessly ruin it.
How do the Thais manage to make their versions of the hot dog taste so bad?

The secret is to load up the hotdog with mustard, at least a quarter of a bottle, then add the veg/salad (until you have the managers of 7/11 restricting the amount), followed by another quarter bottle of mustard. This tends to take the taste of the hotdog away, but the texture of the dog is still there, making it a rather enjoyable snack. The risk of toilet reprecussions the next day are minimal. One thing you can say for 7/11 - they are clean.
How does anyone actually narrow down the pesky parasite? An extremely empty gastro-intestinal tract? Anal adherence to keeping hands, utencils, etc., 100% germ-free?

I quite like cucumber water. Slice the cumber thinly and quickly place the slices under the water. Refreshing that is.

On my last two trips to Asia I got horribly sick and I still don't know what the offending food was. Last summer in Nepal I thought it might be the (yummy) buffalo dumplings I ate in Boudha, though my dining companion(who was in Asia for the first time) didn't get sick once. They were steaming hot so I figured safe, but from now on I do not eat meat in Nepal - on my first trip where I ate pure veg I was fine. Last summer I was laid up for 4 days, puking and shitting my guts out until a course of Cipro and some oral rehydration salts got me back on my feet. In Tibet I had something(yak butter tea, which I usually drink with no problem?) that gave me the worst case of the trots I have ever experienced, and this was at the most inconvenient location, a hilltop monastery where the toilet was located downhill from the guest rooms, emptying into the river. Of course I had the shits attack in the middle of the night and there was no electricity or running water. If I hadn't requested a bucket for my room when I went to bed and I didn't carry Purell wipes when I travel it would have gotten *really* nasty...
Oh, the joys of Himalayan travel....
I can eat and reasonably enjoy anything...raw pork, fish that taste like dirt...etc. I don't think there's much I can't or won't eat.
Not a big fan of noodles though!

Aside from spicey food, the same applies to my dad. Some of the things I've seen him eat! Meat n potato pie, with last night's spag bol - on the same plate - accompanied by sliced white bread.
Not surprisingly, he's known as 'the dustbin' in our family.

I'd murder for a meal like that at the mo. Meat n potato pie Mmmmmmm
Them bugs the streetside cart pushers are haulin would probably do it to me....but then who knows?...might make a tasty treat as well....Oh yeah! Silkworm larvae...that shit's nasty.
Yeah, but insects are hardly an innocuous foodstuff are they?
Mate of mine scoffed a load of 'all butter' biscuits when he was a kid. He ate so much he was throwing up all night and can't look at a packet to this day.
Back in the day I had a bad turn on Gherkins (ate fucking loads of them) and for years couldn't eat pickled or vingear stuff....I'm okay now. Guts, ears, ducks tongue....not sure if I could handle big insects but done ants and them live little shrimpy things....as well as prawns brains etc. and fishes eyes!!!
How's about the eye of a goat served in a bedo's tent in "no-where" Arabia?
scrumptious!! [image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/pukeface.gif]
A couple of beers and I'd eat it mate! RAW if need be!!!
Actually spent a fair bit of time with bedouins (sp?) when I was there....'cos I'm street....or should that be like desert?

You can't be talking about proper, English mustard here then.
^ Dijon is nice on a hot dog!
I'm with kenkannif here . . . I'll eat anything that doesn't eat me first.
Doesn't really qualify as innocuous, I suppose, but the last time I got laid out by cramping, cold-sweating, bowel-distending food poisoning was in Vietnam . . . beware the snails in Hanoi, girls and boys . . . ironically, it was the most expensive meal I had the whole damn trip . . .
[image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/toilet.gif][image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/pukeface.gif]
^ I think the pizzas here (Hut) have made me more ill than some of the dodgy food I've et!!!
Agree. The only time in LOS was from... Pizza Hut. Mind you, I must admit that I think I've had alcohol poisoning a few times (like Pizza Hut but both ends...).
Still enjoy Sangsom & PepsiMax though (I'm counting the calories now!).
^heh . . . can't imagine why . . . I'm sure Pizza Hole's 20-baht-an-hour employees are so assiduous about washing their hands after their potty breaks [image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/grin.gif]
I worked for years and years in the restaurant biz . . . oh the terrible things I've seen . . . surprised I can still eat in 'em at all . . .
It's 26 baht an hour...
I spent 5 years working at an eating place in The Watershed in sunny Bristol. The chef was always picking his nose even when he was sober which wasn't very often "Ehh, StrayCat" he used to say, "I'm entitled to a another free pint while workin' in the hot kitchen - pour me another, lad". He usually had a cold as well - spraying the over-priced 'boutique' food... lovely!
^[image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/laugh.gif] par for the course, mate!
fortunately, I was a chef who didn't pick his nose, and insisted that my crew didn't either . . . but when the cat's away, the mice will play . . .
If you ever get a chance (and assuming you haven't already) pick up Anthony Bourdain's book Kitchen Confidential . . . a quick read and a little bit too much information about life in "professional" kitchens . . .
From Wikipedia: "According to Bourdain, the most disgusting thing he has ever eaten is a Chicken McNugget."[image: http://www.ajarnforum.net/vb/images/smilies/laugh.gif]
