Just watched the DVD of Nobody Knows, a Japanese film directed by Kore-eda Hirokazu. Beautiful film, based on a true story, about a bunch of kids (oldest about 12) who are left alone in a Tokyo apartment while their mother is off with a boyfriend for months and months without a word, and they have to try to cope by themselves.
ok, sounds interesting. rather an enigmatic post mind, care to elucidate?

I havent seen any of the movies mentioned, but they have been on my list for quite some time now. Any idea on where to get them in Bangkok?
Also, there is an interesting one called "Three...Extremes", where three of the currently most daunting asian directors have made short films in a three-in-one package.
One of the films is done by Miike Takashi ( who also did the "real" version of "Ichi the Killer"). I dont know about the ohter two shorties though,but if they are tripled with Miike, they must be out there among the other crazy asian stuff.
Definately worth checking out if youre into the Tartan Asia horror stuff.
oldboy is on sale, as is 'three...extremes' at most vcd/dvd outlets. check for subtititles mind.
if you like 'three...extremes' check out the original, 'three'. one short from thailand, one from hong kong and one from korea. the korean is by far the best. clinically deranged; a pretty apt description of korea if what i hear is true!
I didn't like Nobody Knows. Very slow, very boring. And I've got a high tolerance for slow/boring films. There just wasn't any payoff.
Basically, the films about a group of young kids whose retarded (either literally or just socially) mother leaves them on their own in Tokyo. Their water gets shut off, they don't have any money, and descend further and further into squalor. If this were an American movie they'd eventually do something about it, but as it's a Japanese movie they just kind of sit around and squalor it out -- leaving the film without any kind of climax. Ooooo. No climax. How avant guarde...
Old Boy was okay. It's for sale in the Mang Pong shops now (that red DVD/CD store with a little scorpion on the sign that's all over the place). Like most movies with "OH MY SHITTING CHIRST ITS JUST LIKE TARRANTINO" printed all over the box it's sort of like Tarrantino in that there's an angry guy who hits people a couple of times. The end is very Korean, though, by which I mean self involved, has some bizzare Oedipal / pedophillic slant, and everyone gets what they deserve through miraculous circumstances.
Oh, and the end has a dog in it...
That gets eaten.
Sort of.
Two and a half star movies, both of 'em.
