    Teachers' License

Our Thai staff have just been informed that all processing of a Teachers’ License for language centers have been stopped until further notice.

So without the processing of the TL no one in language centers can get a new work permit or visa extension.

This has straight away made a problem for one teacher whose Non-Im B visa runs out next month. They said it is an internal problem regarding the TL process, new rules (acts) and not everyone agreeing on what the rules are .

Is this the same for anyone else? Any other info?

So without the processing of the TL no one in either, private schools or language centers can get a work permit or visa extension.
Is the process of obtaining a work permit tied to the TL by any law?
I think not yet, and the WP being tied to the visa is the same as always...

Might be worth while getting one of the thai staff to call your local ministry of labour and check the regs...

The Labour Department like to see a TL before issuing a WP based on teaching.

Maybe in Bangers, but not out here in the sticks.. the Labour office is right next to my school, so I think they have been a bit lenient in the past couple of years...
Maybe we will be asked to show proof we are " in the system of applying " this year!

without the license you cant get the visa and without the visa you can't get the Wp

my school are now claiming that without attending the thai culture course you cant get the licence.

do you get the feeling we're not wanted here?

without the license you cant get the visa and without the visa you can't get the Wp
But for renewals, you do your WP first then take the reciept to the immi and they give you a visa renewal.....

So again my question and answer... is the WP tied to the TL?
Ask someone in your local ministry of labour who issue WPs what the criteria is...

We are going round in circles with this.. I think most of us who have visas and WPs already know the system, we would just like to know how the various ministries view this extra step of obtaining a TL...

Agreed, but I do suggest a call to the Ministry of Labour and see what they say about the whole thing....

At my school, we always get the visa renewal before the work permit is issued, though it is possible that something has been initiated for the WP before we go to immigration. In December I got my visa extended and then we went to Labor for my WP. It was ready a week later.

    Re: Teachers' License

Confirmed with the office at my school, the MoE has suspended all applications and renewals while they transfer over control to the Teachers Council.

How long that is all going to take is anyones guess.

There are a few teachers at my school caught out in mid application or renewal.
Our poor paperwork guy is tearing his hair out and very glum.

^ Umbuku, have they suspended the TL applications?

I have a feeling there may be a few more people very glum about this if renewals are due at the end of this term.. me included..

I shall get the paper work lady to call the Dept of Labour asap and see if they need the TL application before they extend the WP... or it will be a trip to Vientianne again if they dont renew and the Immi wont extend coz I dont have a WP renewal...!

we always get the visa renewal before the work permit is issued, though it is possible that something has been initiated for the WP before we go to immigration
yeah sorry I meant to say we don't actually get the WP blue book, just a reciept to show Immi!

    yup. seems so.

My admin have told us that there is a big meeting on February 8th and in that meeting the new (dunno what they are) rules and regulations regarding the granting of TL will be outlined and agreed upon. No international (or other??) schools may hire staff now as a result.

    Re: Teachers' License

This is what I know about Teachers Licenses, Work Permits and Visas (extensions) until "yesterday". Hopefully it sheds some light.

When a teacher wants to work the teacher needs a work permit. The teacher will get one if the teacher can submit a Teacher License of the MOE. In Bangkok it seems to be a real kind of certificate. Upcountry the Service Area of MOE gives a letter to the school stating that the teacher is permitted to work at that specific school.

For a visa extension you have to submit to immigration a small paper from Labour that an extension of the work permit is requested. When you get your visa extension, you go back to Labour and Labour fills in the date when your work permit will expire. Generally that's the same date as the expiration date of your visa.

This was the process since my first work permit in 2003 and will probably not change. The change seems to be that not the MOE in Bangkok or the Service Areas of MOE will issue Teacher Licenses. It's probably The Teachers' Council of Thailand in Bangkok that will.

    Hope this helped.

    Re: Teachers' License

Seems to be going round in circles. Some schools find it easy, others say its impossible. My guess is that schools finding difficulties have very lazy admin, don't pay enough backhanders or quite simply won't produce the cash because Mr Principal is behind on his car payments. quite simply if your school wants you badly enough, they find a way.
